Benefits of the University of Pittsburgh Boren Scholarship
Boren Awards provides funding for US undergraduate students to study abroad in world regions critical to US interests. Maximum awards are determined by duration abroad:
- Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
- Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
- Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only).

This scholarship is open to US citizens. US undergraduate students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

- Get Informed and Connect. View the Boren Awards introductory webinar and understand the selection criteria. For application help, contact your campus’ Boren Awards representative (if one is available).
- Choose your program path. Join a Flagship Language Initiative. Choose AFLI, SAFLI, SEAFLI, or TURFLI for intensive language learning combined with foreign study. OR Develop Your Own Program: Create a study abroad program that corresponds with your objectives.
- Reflect on Your Future Learn how your studies relate to national security and look into U.S. government professions. Start composing your essays and send them to your recommenders for evaluation. Discover more about the one-year federal service requirement in the federal careers area.
- Get application support. Your campus representative is your primary resource. (Without one, you can still apply!) View recent Boren Awards webinars on specific application subjects. Contact Boren Awards staff for one-on-one assistance (email or phone).
- Submit your application by the deadline! Mark your calendars! The deadlines for the 2025 Boren Awards are: Fellowships: January 22, 2025. Scholarships: January 29, 2025. Applications for 2024-25 have closed. The application for 2025-2026 opens in mid-August 2024. Don’t forget the campus deadline! Check internal timeframes to assure support. The results will be announced in mid to late April.
