Applications are open for the Honjo International Scholarship 2025 in Japan. All international students from around the world are eligible to apply for Japanese graduate scholarships. Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Japan provides fully funded scholarships to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree at a renowned Japanese university. The Japanese Graduate Scholarship is offered for the academic year 2025–2026.

Details

Almost all academic fields and majors can be studied for Master’s or Doctoral degrees. There is no application fee to apply for scholarships for foreign students studying at Japanese graduate schools.

Benefits

Honjo International Scholarship in Japan is a fully funded international graduate scholarship for students from all over the world. The Scholarship will give a monthly stipend sufficient to cover all expenditures associated with completing your degree. Details are provided below.

  • ¥230,000 per month for 1 to 2 years degree
  • ¥210,000 per month for 3 years degree
  • ¥180,000 per month for 4 to 5 years of degree.

Required Documents

You have to submit the following document in an online application system to apply for the Honjo International Scholarship 2025 in Japan.

  • Please include an academic transcript (in Japanese or English, with a translation for other languages).
  • Academic transcript for undergraduate course (required). Transferring from the
  • College of Technology (kōsen school system) to the university requires a transcript.
  • Academic transcript from graduate school If you don’t have it yet, don’t submit.
Research Proposal:

    What we want applicants to describe:
  • What you are going to research?
  • What and how you are going to contribute to your home country based on what you will have learned or studied in Japan?
  • What achievements have you made in terms of research, academia, and social activity?
A letter of recommendation from your supervisor:
  • Please obtain a recommendation letter explaining the applicant’s academic performance, personal attributes assessment, future potential, and so forth.
  • If the former supervisor in his or her nation is more familiar with the student’s academic background, the student can also obtain a reference letter from him or her.
  • The number of pages and formats are not specified, however please provide a translation if the document is written in a language other than English or Japanese.
  • Admission documents include admission letters and acceptance letters. Only upload the certificate of enrollment if the student is already enrolled in graduate school.
  • If the admission or acceptance letter is not ready by April 30, 2025, please enter a probable date in the “web application system”. Send it to the HISF office via email as soon as it is available. After April 30, 2025, the web application system will not allow logins.
  • Open all document envelopes to upload as PDF files using the “scholarship web application system”, even if they are marked “Confidential” or “Invalid if opened”.
  • A recommendation letter which is sent by email or post mail by a recommender is acceptable. In that case, upload a PDF file that is written “A letter is sent directly.” The email address that the letter is sent is info@hisf.or.jp.
  • Photocopied documents can also be used to be uploaded.

Eligibility Criteria


To be eligible to apply for the Honjo International Scholarship 2025-26, You must meet the following criteria:

  • The student who does not possess Japanese citizenship
  • Students must be enrolled or applying for a course starting in September or October 2025 at a Japanese graduate institution.
  • Those who are already enrolled and those who are not yet enrolled (including people who are still employed at the time of enrolling for the program) are both eligible to apply for this scholarship if they plan to enroll in September or October 2025.
  • Those planning to begin graduate school in Spring 2025 should apply for the 2025 program, which will accept applications from September 1 to October 31, 2025 (scheduled).
  • at general, a student enrolling at a professional graduate school is ineligible to apply. However, any student who can provide a research plan is entitled to apply.
  • The enrollment period till graduation must be more than 12 months.
  • To be eligible, students must begin their PhD program by the age of 35. The student applying for the master’s programme must begin the master’s course before the age of 30.
  • The student should have a strong desire to serve in their own country as a future career.
  • The student must understand worldwide friendship and goodwill, attend foundation activities, and join the alumni network.
  • The learner must be able to have an everyday conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be held in Japanese (without exception).
