Eligibility Requirements of Global UGRAD 

  • Must be a citizen of a participating country.
  • You must be at least 18 years old by August of the program’s academic year.
  • Should be a full-time undergraduate student with good academic standing at an accredited institution.
  • Need to have at least one full academic year of undergraduate education remaining following May of the program year.
  • Be able to speak in English.
  • Someone who is committed to serving their community.

Ineligibility for the Global UGRAD Program

  • U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
  • Individuals currently studying, training, or doing research in the U.S.
  • Individuals living or working outside the participating countries.
  • Those who participated in US government-funded exchange programs for more than six weeks but did not complete the two-year home residency requirement.
  • Applicants who have sought for U.S. permanent status within the last three years.
  • Employees and immediate family members of non-profits that manage Global UGRAD on behalf of the US Department of State (excluding self-supporting family members who live separately).
  • Local employees of US missions or USAID abroad are disqualified throughout their employment and for one year after it expires.
  • Immediate family members of US Department of State and/or USAID personnel are disqualified for one year after their employment ends (excluding self-supporting family members who live separately).

  1. Africa (Sub-Saharan): Eligible countries from Sub-Saharan Africa include Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, and Zimbabwe.
  2. East Asia and the Pacific includes Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pacific Islands (Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu), Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
  3. Europe and Eurasia includes Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.
  4. Near East (Middle East and North Africa): Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories (West Bank), Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia.
  5. South and Central Asia includes Bangladesh, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
    Western Hemisphere includes Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, and Venezuela.

How to Apply for the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program 2025

  1. Register on the UGRAD Student Portal, confirm via email, and create a password.
  2. Fill out sections for eligibility, personal information, academics, English proficiency, interests, community service, employment, and essays.
  3. Prepare two essays (350-750 words each) based on the provided prompts.
  4. Upload two recommendation forms: one from a faculty member and one from a mentor or employer.
  5. Please attach your transcript, photo ID, and both recommendations.
  6. Complete and submit your application on time.
  7. Ensure that all information is correct and follow the instructions for submitting files.
