What the Sanctuary Scholarship offers is:

  1. For the entire year of the Master’s program, there is a 100% tuition fee waiver.
  2. A £3,000 cash award that will be disbursed as follows:
  3. In November 2025, 25%
  4. In February 2026, 25%
  5. 50% by May 2026
  6. Successful candidates must submit legitimate UK bank account information in order to be paid through the BACs system.

Note: Only full-time, one-year eligible courses taken at the Coach Lane and Newcastle City campuses are eligible for the scholarship.

Eligible Nationalities: International students of any nationality are eligible for this scholarship.

Conditions for Eligibility for the Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarship

The following criteria must be fulfilled by applicants in order to be eligible for the Sanctuary Scholarship 2025–2026:

  • One must be a dependent, spouse, or civil partner of an asylum seeker, or be actively seeking asylum in the UK.
  • Evidence of current immigration status must be presented.
  • must have been offered a spot in a full-time, one-year Master’s program at Northumbria University, either unconditionally or with conditions, beginning in September 2025.
  • All course requirements, including proficiency in the English language, must be met.
  • At the time of application, the applicant must be a resident of Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, or North Cumbria in the Northeast region of England.
  • Due to their immigration status, they must be unable to obtain UK student finance (tuition fee loans or maintenance loans).
  • That relationship had to exist at the time of the asylum application for dependents, spouses, or civil partners. Stepchildren or dependent children must have been 18 years of age or younger at the time of the asylum application.

Application Process for the Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarship

1. Send in your application

  • Fill out the application for the Sanctuary Scholarship.
  • Send in the application by Friday, April 25, 2025, at 16:00.
  • Applications will only be taken into consideration from people who live in the UK.

Step 2: Get Your Documentation Ready

Send in your application with the following files:

  • Evidence of immigration status
  • Northumbria University offer letter
  • Supporting documentation that is pertinent
  • An interview will be a part of the selection process.

Step 3: Notification and Selection

  • The application form, supporting documentation, and interview performance are all considered during the scholarship selection process.
  • Email notifications will be sent to the selected candidates.
  • Applicants who are unsuccessful will not be contacted.

Vital Information

  • Students whose immigration status currently prevents them from accessing UK student finance are the target audience for the Sanctuary Scholarship.
  • The student must continue to be fully enrolled in their course in order for the cash award to be given.
  • Any changes to a student’s immigration status must be promptly reported to Northumbria University.
  • While receiving the Sanctuary Scholarship, recipients are not qualified for any other Northumbria University scholarships.
  • The student will lose the scholarship if they drop out of their course or postpone it.
  • The scholarship is only awarded for a single academic year.
