Students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s programs, as well as recent graduates considering enrolling to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology OIST  program, can serve as research interns at OIST to finish their curriculum. Students who participate in a research internship at OIST can receive experience working in a research setting under the supervision of OIST faculty.

Positions for research interns are offered twice a year based on competition.   • Environmental, ecological, and marine sciences, science, engineering, medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, mathematics, and computational science.

Eligibility Criteria

    • OIST Research Internship Program is open to outstanding students in their final two years of undergraduate or graduate studies at universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas, as well as graduates of such institutions.
    • Students who are currently enrolled need permission from their home university.
    • Educational backgrounds of applicants should match the host unit or units at OIST that they have chosen.
    • Research interns from Japanese universities and institutions are required to arrange and supply their own insurance after being accepted into the OIST Research Internship program.
    • Acceptable insurances include the combination of Gakkensai and Gakkenbai, as well as other insurances that provide equivalent coverage.

Documents Requirement.

  • Scanned copies of your diploma and academic transcripts, including copies of your most recent transcripts from prior degrees (BSc, MSc, etc.). If applicable, a diploma in PDF format (BSc, MSc, etc.).
    • An unofficial transcript or other grade record can be scanned and uploaded to the application page.
    • English explanations must be provided for transcripts produced in languages other than English.
    • Please affix a copy of your university’s enrollment certificate if you haven’t graduated yet; preferably, it should include the date of your intended graduation.
  • Upload a recent ID photo that features your face in the center of the standard passport position.
  • Recommendation Letter:

    After reviewing your work, you must get a letter of recommendation from an academic or research expert. A minimum of one and a maximum of three reference letters from eligible referees must be submitted by each applicant. The application system will get in touch with your references immediately to request the letter or letters using the email address you provide in the online application form. Please obtain your referee’s consent before submitting their details in the form. Application letters sent to them via email are not accepted. Applicants will be notified instantly via the application system as soon as OIST receives a reference letter.

  • Statement of Interest (400 words): A Statement of Interest form is part of the online application process. Please write a 400-word (2500-character) statement that includes the following information:
    • What role do OIST and your chosen research unit or units play in your current skill set and field of expertise? In a separate statement, please explain your interest in and suitability for each research unit if you are interested in more than one.
    • What objectives do you hope to achieve while attending OIST?
    • How does an OIST research internship fit into your overall career objectives?

Note: At the conclusion of the program, they might ask for the completion of an internship report.
